VECO has completed a 5,000km European journey using a heavy-duty truck powered entirely by bioLNG, underlining the potential of biomethane as a key solution in decarbonising long-haul freight transport.

The Tour d’Europe began in Turin and included stops at bioLNG refuelling stations and biogas production sites across Italy, Germany, France and Belgium.

The route was designed to engage stakeholders at every stage of the biomethane supply chain, from producers to distributors and fleet operators.

One key stop was Wipptal Biogas in Sterzing, which produces biomethane from local organic waste such as animal manure and crop residues.

The visit highlighted how circular economy principles can cut greenhouse gas emissions by up to 121%, while supporting local farming communities and protecting the Alpine environment.

The tour concluded in Brussels with a final event attended by industry figures and EU policymakers, calling for technological neutrality in emissions policy.

Simone Curti, head of EMEA commercial operations at IVECO, said: “Technological neutrality is essential to foster innovation and accelerate the transition to sustainable mobility.

“It means not favouring a single technology, but allowing the best solutions to emerge based on real-world performance and environmental impact.

“For this approach to succeed, it must be supported by clear and consistent EU policies that create a level playing field and incentivise investments in diverse low-emission technologies, including biodiesel and biomethane.

“The Tour d’Europe has clearly demonstrated the efficiency and sustainability of biofuels in heavy transport. At IVECO, we believe that flexible pathways toward decarbonization are key.”

Throughout the route, the IVECO S-Way LNG truck ran entirely on certified BioLNG. Using Bosch’s digital fuel twin (DFT) system, the emissions reductions were tracked and verified in real time, offering transparent, data-backed validation of the fuel’s environmental benefits.
