Netherlands to introduce distance-based truck toll from July
The Netherlands will launch a per-kilometre truck toll on 1st July, replacing the Eurovignette for domestic roads.
The Netherlands will introduce a distance-based truck toll on 1st July, requiring operators to pay per kilometre travelled.
The system will apply to both domestic and foreign vehicles in the N2 and N3 categories, with charges linked to vehicle weight and emissions, meaning cleaner and lighter trucks will incur lower costs.
Operators will be required to install an onboard unit and hold a valid contract with an approved service provider, which will record mileage and ensure the correct toll is paid through either EETS providers or a national system.
The toll will apply across most Dutch motorways, as well as selected provincial and municipal roads, with the existing Eurovignette system ending in the Netherlands once the new charging model is implemented.
The Eurovignette will continue to apply in Sweden and Luxembourg, but not within the Netherlands once the transition takes place.
Under the new rules, onboard units must remain active whenever a truck is in motion within the Netherlands, including on roads where tolls do not apply, with operators facing fines if a valid unit is not in use.
If an onboard unit is lost or fails, operators will be required to arrange a replacement within 3 hours to remain compliant.
Authorities have advised operators to ensure payment arrangements and onboard units are in place ahead of travel to avoid disruption once the system goes live.
