Scania, Unicon and Liebherr-Mischtechnik have jointly developed and deployed a fully electric concrete transport solution aimed at reducing emissions in construction logistics.

The project combines a battery-electric Scania truck with a fully integrated electric concrete mixer system, creating what the companies describe as a zero tailpipe emission solution for ready-mix concrete transport.

The vehicle uses an integrated electric power take-off system to power the mixer drum directly from the truck’s battery pack, eliminating the need for separate diesel-powered auxiliary equipment.

Tobias Ejderhamn, global manager for transformation and new business at Scania, said: “This project shows that electrification is not limited to standard applications.

“It can be applied where it matters most.

“By combining our modular electric platform with deep application expertise and close customer collaboration, we are demonstrating a viable path towards zero-emission transport, even in the most demanding use cases.”

The truck has been developed over a 3-year period and features battery capacity of up to 400kWh, with an operational range of around 200 kilometres based on route modelling and energy analysis.

Concrete transport has traditionally been viewed as one of the more difficult commercial vehicle applications to electrify due to high energy requirements and the need to continuously power mixer systems.

Unicon said the deployment forms part of its wider plan to scale zero-emission transport operations across its fleet.

Christian Elleby, supply chain and procurement director at Unicon, said: “This is not a pilot, it is a solution designed for daily operations and future scale.

“We are taking solid steps to reduce emissions in construction logistics, and this collaboration shows what is possible when the right partners and technologies come together.”

Scania and Unicon confirmed that an additional 10 electric vehicles are already on order, with Unicon targeting fully emission-free concrete transport operations by 2035.

Ejderhamn added: “As the transition accelerates, the industry must move beyond pilots and into scalable solutions.

“This project shows how electrification can deliver real impact – reducing emissions, improving working conditions, and enabling more sustainable cities.”
