Volvo Trucks tops UK tractor unit market as FH Aero drives 2025 registrations
Volvo Trucks moved into first place for UK tractor unit registrations in 2025, driven by strong demand for its FH Aero range and growing uptake of alternative fuel vehicles.
Volvo Trucks led the UK tractor unit market in 2025, securing top spot for the first time after a sharp increase in new registrations driven by its FH Aero range.
The manufacturer finished the year with a 22% share of the UK tractor unit market, moving up from third place to first, according to registration figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders. The performance was underpinned by strong demand for the FH Aero, which has been positioned around fuel efficiency, lower emissions and flexibility across multiple driveline options.
Volvo Trucks also emerged as the clear market leader in alternative fuel technology during 2025, with electric and gas-powered vehicles accounting for a 33.1% share of that segment. The breadth of the FH Aero line-up, available with diesel, gas-powered or fully electric drivelines, has allowed operators to align long-haul fleet purchases with both cost and sustainability objectives.
Hannah Mayo, Director of New Vehicle Sales for Volvo Trucks UK & Ireland, said: “The FH Aero range has proved hugely popular since its launch in 2024, helping operators to cut fuel costs and improve sustainability. It has been the catalyst of these fantastic figures. Our dealer network has done a great job of getting demonstrators into fleets and we’d like to pay a huge thank you to all our customers who have placed faith in the product, whether new conquest fleets or those who we have long-standing relationships.”
Deliveries of the first FH Aeros to UK customers began in summer 2024, with the range offering five cab options, multiple power outputs and a wide choice of chassis configurations. Around 75% of FH Aeros sold in the UK to date have been specified with Volvo’s Camera Monitoring System, replacing traditional wing mirrors to improve aerodynamics and visibility.
Fuel efficiency has been a central selling point. In 2025, the FH Aero recorded 11.25 miles per gallon in the Commercial Motor fuel test, beating Volvo Trucks’ previous record by almost 1.5 mpg and setting a new benchmark for real-world fuel economy in 44-tonne operations.
Beyond tractor units, Volvo Trucks also strengthened its overall position in the UK market for vehicles above 16 tonnes, ending 2025 in second place with a 19.1% market share, its strongest result to date. The wider line-up, including the FH16, FH, FM, FMX, FE and FL ranges, continued to support demand across long-haul, construction and regional distribution applications.
